3 Signs You Need Elevator Maintenance

Did you know an elevator is one of the most reliable modes of transportation? When was the last time you got stuck on an elevator? It’s not common though it happens now and then.

Elevator accidents and injuries are also uncommon but they do happen. Accident prevention makes elevator maintenance a crucial part of elevator operation.

Do you own a building with an elevator? Do you run an apartment complex with an elevator?

Regular elevator maintenance prevents accidents and saves you from expensive elevator repair bills or untimely replacements. Is your elevator telling you something?

Read this article for three signs your elevator needs maintenance.

1. Visual Early Warning Signs

Even if you have a regular maintenance contract, pay attention to your elevator. There are some visual cues that signal a need for maintenance.

Horizontal Scratches

Do you notice some horizontal scratches on the elevator doors? That’s a sign your doors are falling out of alignment.

As soon as you notice this, call for maintenance. Don’t procrastinate or you’ll cause unnecessary premature wearing of the door.

Door Speed

Pay attention to any changes you notice in the speed of the door. Is it closing much slower? Is it going too fast?

If you notice any changes in the door speed, that’s another reason to get the elevator checked. Changing door speeds need repair, and if left unchecked, may result in the need for a new door system.

Misaligned Floor Stops

Is the elevator floor stopping a little bit above or below the landing threshold? This is a tripping hazard and needs an elevator service tech immediately. Do not let this go because this could cause a serious accident.

You should have a contract with an elevator service provider. Control your contract by making sure you have all maintenance issues spelled out in writing. Reputable elevator maintenance companies follow an elevator maintenance checklist to make sure everything is running properly.

Cold Temperatures

While cold isn’t a visual sign, it’s something to watch out for. Do you have hydraulic elevators? Hydraulics are sensitive to cold.

When the cold weather hits, make sure the machine room stays 50 degrees Fahrenheit or above. This ensures smooth operation.

2. Audible Early Warning Signs

An elevator that’s running smoothly doesn’t make a lot of noise. Do you hear some strange clanking or banging noises? Is the elevator squealing or screeching?

If you hear any unusual noises, contact your maintenance company.

3. A Problem With the Ride Quality

When you take a ride on an elevator, there are some noises. But an elevator ride should be smooth without a lot of vibration, bumps, or noises. If you feel anything unusual in the quality of your elevator ride, bring it to the attention of your elevator service provider.

Be Vigilant With Elevator Maintenance

By keeping up with your elevator maintenance, you’ll avoid service interruptions and expensive repairs. Spend a few minutes in your elevator each week and call a technician if you notice any of the above issues.
